Geo

Geo is the earth element of Liyue. It trades flashy reactions for shields, constructs, and steady damage — the backbone of defensive and mono-element teams.

1. The Geo vision and its identity

Geo is the element of contracts, tied to the nation of Liyue and its Archon. Unlike Anemo, Geo does not spread other elements. It reacts with Pyro, Hydro, Electro, and Cryo only, and it does not react with Anemo or Dendro at all. That narrow interaction list makes Geo feel isolated, but it also means Geo never disrupts the amplifying reactions your other characters set up.

The element's value is defensive and structural. Geo units provide shields, drop constructs that deal off-field damage, and, with the right resonance, turn a shield into a damage buff. In the tier list, Geo characters are rarely the highest raw damage, but several are permanent staples because of utility no other element supplies.

2. The Crystallize reaction

Crystallize is Geo's signature reaction. When a Geo attack hits an enemy already carrying Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo, the reaction deals no damage but drops a shard of that element on the field. Walking over the shard grants a shield of the matching element. The shield absorbs 250% of damage from its own element and 100% from everything else, and it also provides interruption resistance so your character is not staggered mid-attack.

Shard rules and uptime

A Crystallize shard lasts about 15 seconds on the field, and only three shards can exist at once — older ones vanish if a fourth appears. The shield picked up from a shard also lasts 15 seconds, and only one Crystallize shield can be active at a time; picking up a new one overwrites the old. A separate Geo shield, such as one from a Geovishap or certain character skills, can coexist with a Crystallize shield. Crystallize can only fire once per second on the same target, so steady off-field application from a teammate keeps shields flowing.

Shield scaling

The shield's absorption scales with the level of the Geo character who triggered the reaction and with that character's Elemental Mastery. A level-90 unit with high Elemental Mastery produces a far tougher shard than a low-level one. This is why some Geo supports value Elemental Mastery even though Crystallize itself deals no damage. The numbers and the exact formula are listed on the Genshin Impact Wiki Crystallize page, which the artifact index build advice builds on.

3. Geo constructs

Several Geo characters summon constructs — stationary objects that deal damage or provide utility independently of the character's field time. Constructs let a Geo unit contribute while you play someone else, which is the core of off-field Geo damage. Only one construct from a given character can exist at a time, and constructs can resonate with each other to deal bonus damage when placed near one another.

Albedo's Solar Isotoma and Zhongli's Stone Stele are the two most common examples. A well-placed construct turns dead space into a damage source and, in Albedo's case, scales that damage off Defense rather than Attack. This quirk makes Defense-roll artifacts attractive on him, a rarity among damage dealers.

4. Geo Resonance

Two Geo characters in a party trigger Geo Resonance, called Enduring Rock. It increases shield strength by 15%. Additionally, any character protected by a shield deals 15% more damage and, when they hit an enemy, lowers that enemy's Geo resistance by 20% for 15 seconds. The damage and resistance parts require a shield to be active, so the resonance rewards running a shielder such as Zhongli alongside your Geo damage dealer.

This resonance is a large reason mono-Geo and double-Geo teams work. A Zhongli shield alone satisfies the "protected by a shield" condition for the whole team, so a Geo carry like Itto or Navia gets the 15% damage bonus permanently during a fight. Compared with a flat attack resonance, Enduring Rock asks for more setup but pays off harder in sustained fights.

5. Best Geo characters and their roles

The Geo roster spans shielders, off-field sub-DPS units, and two main damage dealers. The units below define the element's roles.

Zhongli

Zhongli is the premier shielder. His Jade Shield scales off his Max HP, petrifies enemies, and satisfies Geo Resonance for the whole team. Most accounts keep him built regardless of the rest of the roster because his shield removes interruption and lets carries attack freely.

Albedo

Albedo is the off-field sub-DPS. His Solar Isotoma deals Defense-scaling Area Geo damage whenever an ally hits a nearby enemy, and it generates a small amount of Elemental Mastery for the team through his passives. He slots into Geo teams and into some Dendro teams as a quiet damage and utility piece.

Arataki Itto

Itto is the claymore Geo main damage dealer. His burst converts normal attacks into charged-style hits, and his damage relies on stacking his Superlative Superstrength stacks. He wants a shield (Zhongli or Gorou-adjacent setups) and benefits fully from Geo Resonance's damage bonus.

Ningguang

Ningguang is a catalyst user who fires jade screens and screen-enhanced attacks. She is a strong four-star option for early accounts and a capable burst sub-DPS later. Her screen also counts as a construct that resonates with other Geo objects.

Geo Traveler

The Geo Traveler provides a deployable construct and a burst that can group and damage. Free to every player, they are a serviceable early Geo option and a way to test double-Geo resonance before pulling a dedicated unit.

Navia

Navia is a Fontaine Geo main damage dealer who consumes Crystallize shards to charge her skill's cannon shots. She rewards teams that apply many elements so shards spawn constantly, and she benefits from Geo Resonance's shield-gated damage bonus. Her kit is one of the few that directly rewards Crystallize uptime.

Chiori

Chiori is an off-field Geo damage dealer who summons a construct that strikes alongside the active character. She pairs with other Geo units and with Navia, and she contributes both damage and the construct resonance that defines modern Geo teams.

6. Building a Geo team

Start with a shield source — usually Zhongli — to activate Geo Resonance and protect your carry. Add a construct user like Albedo or Chiori for off-field damage, then fill the last slots with your main damage dealer and a flex support. If you are playing Navia, prioritize teammates that apply Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo so Crystallize shards appear often. For stat and weapon details per unit, check the character database and the relevant build guides. Region farming for Geo materials centers on Liyue bosses and domains.
