Pyro in Genshin Impact
A practical look at the Pyro element: its amplifying reactions, its resonance, and where the headline pyro characters sit in a damage team.

1. The Pyro vision
Pyro is the element of fire, associated with the nation of Natlan and its Archon Mavuika. In combat it is the most aggressive element in the game because both of its amplifying reactions — Vaporize and Melt — are the highest-damage multipliers available, and because it scales off the ATK stat that most carries naturally build. If Hydro is the enabler element, Pyro is the one that cashes in the enablement for big numbers.
The Pyro status itself does nothing on its own; it simply opens the door to reactions. Any source of Pyro damage applies the aura, and environmental fire (torches, campfires, grass igniting into Burning) applies it to you as well, which is why you can accidentally set yourself Burning while exploring. Knowing that is half the battle in Pyro Hypostasis andolean domains where standing in fire is a real cost.
2. Pyro reactions
Pyro reacts with all six other elements. The two that matter for damage are Vaporize and Melt; Burning and Burgeon matter for Dendro teams; Overloaded and Swirl are crowd-control and spread tools.
Vaporize
Vaporize is shared with Hydro. The multiplier flips depending on the trigger. When a Pyro hit lands on a Hydro aura, the damage is multiplied by 1.5. When a Hydro hit lands on a Pyro aura, it is multiplied by 2.0. So a Pyro carry wants to be the trigger on top of a Hydro aura for the 1.5x, while a Hydro carry wants to be the trigger on top of a Pyro aura for the 2x. Both directions are strong, which is why the Hydro-plus-Pyro pairing is the most common damage core in the game. The exact ordering and aura gauge math is on the Hydro page.
Melt
Melt is Pyro plus Cryo. Here the stronger side is reversed: a Pyro hit on a Cryo aura multiplies damage by 2.0, while a Cryo hit on a Pyro aura multiplies by 1.5. That means a Pyro carry (Hu Tao, Diluc, Mavuika, Arlecchino, Lyney) wants a Cryo unit to set the aura and then melts on top of it for the full 2x. The catch is that Cryo application from off-field is harder to sustain than Hydro, so Melt teams live or die on the Cryo unit's uptime. The cryo side of this pairing is detailed on the Cryo page.
Burning and Burgeon
Dendro plus Pyro produces Burning, a low-damage-over-time Pyro aura that keeps the element applied. On its own Burning is weak, but it matters because Bloom (Dendro plus Hydro) creates Dendro Cores, and when those cores touch Pyro they detonate as Burgeon for AoE Dendro damage that scales off the Pyro trigger's Elemental Mastery. Burgeon teams are a niche but legitimate Pyro-Dendro-Hydro overlap, and they reward a Pyro unit built for EM rather than ATK.
Overloaded and Swirl
Pyro plus Electro is Overloaded, an AoE knockback explosion. It clears auras and disrupts enemy positioning but its damage is modest and the knockback can annoy melee carries. Pyro plus Anemo is Swirl, which spreads the Pyro aura to nearby enemies and lets a Viridescent Venerer user shred Pyro resistance — the standard way to boost a Pyro DPS in multi-target content.
3. Pyro Resonance: Fervent Flames
Two pyro characters in a four-person party grant Fervent Flames. It cuts the time your units are affected by Cryo by 40% and raises ATK by 25%. The ATK boost is the draw: because Pyro carries scale off ATK, Double Pyro is a straight 25% damage increase with no investment, and the Cryo-duration cut helps against Cryo shields and the Freeze crowd-control that Cryo teams lean on. This is why Melt and Vaporize teams frequently run Bennett alongside the on-field carry — Bennett both heals and supplies the resonance and an ATK buff at once.
4. Pyro characters and their roles
The Pyro roster is the deepest of any element, spanning self-buffing on-field drivers, the strongest healer/buffer in the game, and a wave of EM and Burgeon specialists. The units below are the ones you will actually build around.
On-field Pyro DPS
Hu Tao is the classic Vaporize carry: her skill converts HP into attack power, her charged attacks trigger on a Pyro aura for 1.5x, and she wants a shield because she drains her own health. Diluc is the older claymore driver who still works in Vaporize and Melt with Xingqiu or a Cryo setter. Mavuika is Natlan's Archon and a top-tier Pyro driver whose bike mode and burst scale off multiple stats and who also fills the Pyro resonance slot. Arlecchino is a self-reliant polearm carry who bonds with active characters and wants a Vaporize or Melt aura without a healer overriding her blood-debt mechanic. Lyney is a charge-attack bow user who leans on his own Pyro application and a second Pyro teammate for resonance.
The support and enabler core
Bennett is the single most-used Pyro unit in the game. His burst heals up to a threshold and grants a large ATK buff inside its circle, which simultaneously enables Fervent Flames, sustains the team, and pumps the on-field carry. Xiangling is the off-field Pyro engine: her Pyronado and burst apply Pyro constantly, which is exactly what a Hydro or Cryo unit needs to trigger Vaporize or Melt. She appears in more team comps than any other four-star because her damage is independent of field time. Together, Bennett plus Xiangling are the backbone of National-style teams that vaporize with Xingqiu or melt with a Cryo unit.
Melt and Vaporize team shapes
A Hu Tao Vaporize team is Hu Tao plus Yelan or Xingqiu (Hydro aura) plus a flex plus Zhongli or another shielder. A Melt team swaps the Hydro unit for a Cryo applier such as Rosaria, Kaeya, or Citlali and keeps Bennett for resonance and buff. Mavuika and Arlecchino both flex between these shapes depending on which off-field enabler you own. The throughline is always the same: one Pyro carry, one off-field aura setter of the opposite element, one Bennett-shaped battery, and one flex who either shreds resistance or adds a second reaction.
5. Practical notes on Pyro investment
For Vaporize and Melt carries, Elemental Mastery matters up to the point where your reaction bonus caps relative to your base damage; past that, crit rate, crit damage, and ATK% take over. Emblem of Severed Fate is the default set for skill-burst carries like Xiangling and Hu Tao's burst, while Crimson Witch of Flames rewards repeated Vaporize and Melt procs. Bennett wants Energy Recharge and HP, not damage, because his buff scales off his base ATK and his heal off his Max HP. Read each unit's own build before committing resin, but the reaction order — Pyro triggering on Cryo for 2x Melt, Pyro triggering on Hydro for 1.5x Vaporize — is the rule that decides your entire team's rotation.
