1. Structure and act breakdown

The Fontaine Archon Quest spans five acts released across versions 4.0 through 4.2. HoYoWiki lists the chapter as Chapter IV: Act V "Masquerade of the Guilty," which tells you the chapter and its final act share the same name. The acts are Act I "Prelude of Blancheur and Noirceur" (4.0), Act II "As Light Rain Falls Without Reason" (4.1), Act III "To the Stars Shining in the Depths" (4.1), Act IV "Cataclysm's Quickening" (4.2), and Act V "Masquerade of the Guilty" (4.2). You need Adventure Rank 40 to start Act I, and each later act chains directly from the one before it.

Most players remember the Fontaine Archon Quest for its tone shift. The first two acts read like a courtroom mystery and a prison break, but by Act IV the story commits to a full apocalyptic prophecy. That pacing is deliberate: the "Masquerade" of the title refers to the performance Furina keeps up for centuries, and the quest pays it off in the Opera Epiclese.

How the acts connect

Act I introduces the Court of Fontaine, the Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale, and the magician siblings. Act II pulls the Traveler into the Fortress of Meropide after a false charge and sets up the Primordial Sea threat. Act III expands the underwater mystery and Childe's role. Act IV ("Cataclysm's Quickening") brings the prophecy to the surface with the Poisson disaster, and Act V delivers the trial, the flooding, and the Narwhal. 2. The prophecy and the trial of Furina

The spine of the Fontaine Archon Quest is the prophecy that Fontaine's people would be dissolved into the Primordial Sea, judged by the Hydro Archon, and left weeping on an empty throne. The stone slates you find in Act IV spell out the stages: the missing girls, a death sentence for the Hydro Archon, Navia falling into the seawater, and the flood reaching the Fortress of Meropide. The quest spends real time on this because the prophecy is not a lie, it is a frame the characters spend five acts subverting.

Furina is the defendant in the Opera Epiclese trial, but she is not the true Hydro Archon. The real Archon, Focalors, split her divinity from her human vessel centuries earlier. Focalors ruled through the Oratrice and the armor of the courtroom, while Furina acted the part of a capricious god above the city. The trial is the mechanism Focalors built to return the Hydro Authority to its rightful owner, Neuvillette, and to satisfy the Heavenly Principles without dooming the nation.

Focalors, the Oratrice, and Neuvillette

Neuvillette is the Hydro Dragon Sovereign and the Chief Justice of Fontaine, and the Fontaine Archon Quest quietly positions him as the one authority the prophecy cannot account for. When Focalors dissolves herself into the Oratrice during the verdict, the Hydro Authority transfers to Neuvillette. That moment is why the flood stops being a death sentence: as the Sovereign, Neuvillette can command the Primordial Sea instead of being consumed by it. The "Masquerade of the Guilty" is, in the end, Furina's five-hundred-year performance of guilt so the nation could survive.

Worth noting for completionists: Furina is a playable Hydro unit whose talent materials come from the boss below, and her story makes far more sense after the quest. Our Hydro page covers her kit context.

3. Key characters you meet

The Fontaine Archon Quest has one of the densest cast introductions in the game. Beyond Neuvillette and Furina, the arc leans on a handful of recurring faces who carry later story beats.

Lyney, Lynette, and Freminet open the story as the House of the Hearth siblings and suspected criminals. Their act-one magic show is the hook, and Freminet's quiet arc pays off in the Fortress. Wriothesley, the Duke of the Fortress of Meropide, runs the prison and becomes central once the action moves underground; his duel-adjacent charisma and the Meropide setting are a highlight of Act III and Act IV. Navia, head of the Spina di Rosula, drives the Poisson disaster and the emotional core of Act IV after Melus and Silver are lost to the Primordial Sea. Clorinde appears as Fontaine's champion duelist and ties into the trial's logic. Arlecchino (The Knave) and Childe (Tartaglia) both show up with Fatui and Abyss-river agendas that ripple into later regions. Charlotte, the journalist, closes the arc and gives the player a soft epilogue.

If you plan to pull or build any of these units, check the character pages and the region map for where their story beats land.

4. The All-Devouring Narwhal boss

The marquee fight of the Fontaine Archon Quest is the All-Devouring Narwhal, a whale-like entity from beyond Teyvat that fed on the Primordial Sea and triggered the rising water levels. It crashes the Opera Epiclese during Furina's performance, is driven off by Childe in his Foul Legacy form, and is then pursued into the Primordial Sea by the Traveler and Neuvillette. Defeating it there is what tips the prophesied flood into motion, and it is the climax the whole chapter builds toward.

After the quest, the Narwhal becomes a weekly Trounce boss in the Salacia Plain underwater area, unlocked by finishing Chapter IV Act V. The fight has no elemental weakness but shows high resistance to Hydro (Narwhal form) and Electro (Dark Shadow form), so most players bring Pyro, Cryo, or physical teams plus a Pneuma/Ousia unit to break the Eye of Maelstrom and the Dark Shadow phase. Its drops, Lightless Mass and Lightless Silk String, are needed to level Furina and Charlotte. Note that Furina herself is never a boss; the "trial" framing sometimes confuses new players into expecting a Furina fight, but the real opponent is the Narwhal.

5. Length and rewards

The full Fontaine Archon Quest runs several hours of cutscene-heavy story, with Act IV and Act V being the longest. Each act grants Adventure EXP, Mora, Hero's Wit, and Mystic Enhancement Ore, and the Primogem totals across all five acts land in the low hundreds. Act V specifically awards an Intertwined Fate on completion plus the "Tears Among the Stars" and "Memory of the Running Stream" collectibles, and it unlocks the All-Devouring Narwhal domain. Story achievements tied to the arc include "The Gulls Once Wept," "Love is Destructive," "The Stage of Fate," "For a Better Tomorrow," and the chapter-completion "Masquerade of the Guilty."

For reference while planning, the Fontaine map marks the Court of Fontaine, Poisson, the Fortress of Meropide, and the Salacia Plain underwater zone where the boss lives. If you are working through the region end to end, the quests index links the World Quest chains that the Archon Quest assumes you have touched.
